• Absence Procedures

If your child is not going to be in school, please call Attendance Officer Lucrezia Maurin at 201-641-5833 ext. 120 by 8:30 a.m.  Voicemail is available around the clock for your convenience.   Following each absence, please send in a note that explains why your child was absent, and please sign the note.  According to the district’s policy, an “excused” absence is a student’s absence from school for one of the following reasons:

    1. A student’s illness
    2. A student’s uncoverable and/or uncovered weeping skin lesion
    3. A death or critical illness in the student’s immediately family
    4. Quarantine
    5. Observance of the student’s religion on a day approved for that purpose by the State Board of Education
    6. A student’s suspension from school
    7. A student’s required attendance in court
    8. Necessary and unavoidable medical or dental appointments that cannot be scheduled at a time other than the school day

An “unexcused” absence is designated by the school for the following reasons (among others):

    1. Family travel
    2. Performance of household or babysitting duties
    3. Student is working
    4. Recreational activities

For ten or more cumulative unexcused absences, the school must make a referral to the court program required by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts.
